As some of your children may have shared with you this week, this will be my last year teaching at Hall Memorial School. After 12 years here in Willington, I will be leaving to go to the East Hartford School district to an elementary school in the fall.
It is with many emotions that I leave this great school. I have loved my time here, and enjoyed working with all the students and staff. I am filled with many wonderful memories to look back on as I depart on a new professional journey. I will be an instructional coach at my new school. This role allows me to mentor teachers and work closely with the school administration to help achieve the principal's vision and reach the school goals. This is a step on my way to using my newly acquired degree in educational leadership, and my goal of being an assistant principal at an elementary school in a few years. I wish everyone continued success here at HMS! The students continue to impress me with all of their hard work. I was excited to see some many families at STEAM night this past week, and all of the colonial models and science sensory projects on display. We have some amazing kiddos with so many gifts in this grade. Continue to check out my website for upcoming events. I am also trying to send out a few remind messages each week letting you know which handouts to look out for. The current one is a "talent waiver" so the Connecticut Historical Society can take photos when they come next Friday for our colonial visit. Also, during this upcoming week we will be having the soon to be 5th graders visiting on Wednesday, June 6th, and the 5th graders will be helping to get them adjusted. We are still looking for parent volunteers for the Colonial Field day on the afternoon of June 15. Please contact me if you are interested in helping from 12:45-2:30.
Ask your students about the colonial field day handout as well as the STEAM night handout. These are two upcoming fun events that promote family participation. Also, look at my webpage weekly to stay on top of upcoming events.
Have a great long weekend! Monday is our Plimoth field trip. The weather looks good, and we are excited for a fun day. Students brought home a handout on Friday reminding students about what they should bring with them on this day away from school. I will also being send out a remind message 30 minutes before our arrival back to school. Keep an eye out for the message.
This Thursday there will also be a Running Club field trip that will happen in the morning. I can't believe that it is May, and our school year is almost over. There are tons of events coming up, so mark your calendars.
May 14: 3rd Quarter Success Assembly May 21: Plimoth Field Trip May 29: STEAM Night June 6: 4th grade visit to HMS June 8: Connecticut Historical Society Visit at HMS June 15: Colonial Field day for 5th grade Students will be participating in a cross-curricular unit on the colonial time period over the next two months. Students will be participating in activities across all subject areas. Mrs. Smith will anchor the instruction, but students will participate in colonial pen pal letters, colonial house model simulations, historical fiction reading, amongst other activities. The 5th grade teachers are excited for the students to be immersed in such an interesting part of our history! Students received paperwork for our field trip to Plimoth on May 21st. The lottery for chaperones will be drawn this coming Tuesday, May 8th. If you want to be considered, please return the blue paperwork by that morning.
Also, Mrs. Knight in the cafeteria offered to provide bagged lunches at regular cost of school lunch. Keep your eye out for that paperwork request coming out next week. If you have any questions regarding activities, cost ($30), etc. please reach out to your student's homeroom teacher. This is a new field trip this year planned by Mrs. Smith, in replacement of our Sturbridge Village field trip, and we are super excited to visit a place that our students study as part of their colonial unit. I am so proud of our students and how hard they worked this week taking the standardized state testing. They were very focused, using their strategy, and putting forth an amazing effort. They have been earning tons of tickets to enter into the raffle for prizes after the conclusion of testing.
Next week students will take the science test on Thursday, and will complete any make up testing. Otherwise it will be back to a normal week. Students' schedules will vary next week due to SBAC testing. Limited homework will be assigned. Also, please try to ensure that students have breakfast and bring a snack- research shows that having eaten prior to testing helps students to stay focused.
Also, when you get a chance, ask students about our raffle ticket program during test. They have the opportunity to win some great experiences for a strong effort during testing.
